John Robin Heard Cemetery
Douglassville, Cass County · Texas
Erected 1976
A 2009 transcription on the Cass County TXGenWeb site lists 23 named burials here, among them J. D. Floyd of Company D, 1st Mississippi Cavalry (1845-1934), and Charles D. Heard of Bird's Texas Cavalry, with Masonic symbols on the stones of three Hendersons. Faye Spurger Perdue wrote in 1979 that Killis S. Floyd, who deeded the land for Floyds' Hill Church, is buried in the Heard cemetery. The transcription lists a K. S. Floyd (1824-1886) and Martha Floyd (1825-1888), and notes a stone of bricks and rock without a name.
What the plaque says
John Robin Heard Cemetery Land for this one-acre family cemetery (3.5 mi. S) was donated by John Robin Heard (1794-1866), who came to Texas in 1853 and founded the nearby town of Cussetta. First burial occurred in 1861 after the death of Cornelius Floyd (b. 1859), Heard's grandson. The 23 graves include those of Heard and his second wife, Mary Hopkins Heard (1806-1863). The cemetery fence was provided by another of Heard's grandsons, W. Q. Henderson (1858-1934). Descendants formed a cemetery association in 1974 and organized a perpetual care trust fund. (1976)
