Jim Hogg County
Hebbronville, Jim Hogg County · Texas
Erected 1936
The land was ranched long before Hebbronville or the county existed. Xavier Vela received the earliest recorded grant in 1805, and about 24 grants followed through 1836. That year Hipólito García established the Randado Ranch on a Mexican grant, and by the late 1870s it was a community of about 300. The Texas legislature confirmed the old grants in 1852. The Handbook of Texas notes that Hispanic ranchers kept their land and much of their political power well into the twentieth century, and that in 1920 only 501 acres in the county were under cultivation.
