First United Methodist Church of Hebbronville

Hebbronville, Jim Hogg County · Texas
Erected 2012

Hebbronville exists because one landowner refused to sell. When the Texas-Mexican Railway came through in 1883, Francisco P. Peña, who operated Peña Station, would not part with land for a townsite. The company turned to J. R. Hebbron, who arranged a sale near Peñitas. The old Peñitas station was loaded onto a flatcar, hauled a mile and a half west and renamed Hebbronville. Hebbron was born in London in 1828, spent most of his adult life in California and died near Salinas in 1926. His photograph hangs in the Jim Hogg County Courthouse.
