Irishtown

The state's text concedes the place was already inhabited and then keeps the second name. Irishtown was a Miwok settlement, and the register says the first white settlers found a city of wigwams here, with hundreds of mortars ground into the rock to prove how long people had been coming. Those mortars are still the evidence. It became a stopping place for emigrants bound for the southern mines, and the townsite now lies inside Pine Grove.
