In Recognition of World War I Veterans

Spink County · South Dakota
Erected by Joseph A. Sondergard

The shield cut above the words is the emblem of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A., an organization that came late to the men it served. It formed in Ohio in 1949, three decades after the Armistice, organized its local units as barracks, and was chartered by the 85th Congress in 1958. As its members aged the barracks closed one by one, and the organization ended with its last members; the final American veteran of the war died in 2011. This stone in the cemetery north of Redfield is a single comrade's tribute.
