Abbie Gardner
Spink County · South Dakota
Erected by Charlotte Warrington Turner Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution
Her rescuers were Dakota. Little Paul Mazakutemani, John Otherday and Chetanmaza left the Yellow Medicine agency on May 23 to buy her from Inkpaduta's Wahpekute band, whose attack at Spirit Lake that March, revenge for a whiskey trader's killing of Inkpaduta's brother, had left 35 to 40 settlers dead. They found her with a Yankton camp of about 190 lodges near the mouth of Snake Creek, and after five days of council paid two horses, twelve blankets and two kegs of powder. She was fourteen, and reached St. Paul on June 22.
