Historical Marker · No. 585
Honoring the People of the Eureka Area
McPherson County · South Dakota
Erected 1987
The granite's fifteen years of wheat match what the trade said about itself at the time. Eureka was platted in October 1887 at the end of the Milwaukee Road's track, and for the next decade and a half it was the shipping point for German-Russian farmers across a wide, railless country. Prairie Public's history counts 42 elevators, some 4,000,000 bushels a year and 32 commission houses, and calls it the Milwaukee's most profitable station. The tall steel wheat stalk rising behind the stone is a sculpture, not part of the marker.
