Historical Marker · No. 332
Charles N. Herreid
McPherson County · South Dakota
Erected by Eureka Chamber of Commerce and State Highway Commission, 1961
The bronze gives Herreid's sponsorship of the State Historical Society one clause. The bill behind it, House Bill 10, passed in the first weeks of his term, and he signed it on February 5, 1901, turning a private society into the state's Department of History. Doane Robinson ran that department from 1901 to 1926. The same summer a Soo Line branch reached a new townsite in Campbell County, and it was named Herreid for the governor. His term ran to January 3, 1905, not to the 1904 cast here.
