Home of Gen. Sidney Sherman
Houston, Harris County · Texas
Erected 1936
The house the stone marks was one of several Sherman homes, and the Handbook traces them. Back from Kentucky after the revolution with his wife, Catherine Isabel Cox, Sherman set up Mount Vernon, a one-room log house on a bluff below the San Jacinto battleground, and in 1839 moved the family to a house on San Jacinto Bay. After annexation he settled at Harrisburg. When the Civil War came he was keeping Galveston's Island City Hotel; the Secession Convention made him the city's commandant until illness sent him home to the bay. Catherine died in 1865.
