Hollenberg Ranch Pony Express Station
Washington County · Kansas
The building is a frame structure of a story and a half on a stone foundation, divided into six rooms. Four were the Hollenberg family's home, one was a shop and one a bar and tavern, and the riders and other guests slept in the loft. A stable and a blacksmith's shop stood with it. It served as a home station, where riders switched mounts, and also as a relay for the Overland Mail. After Hollenberg's death in 1874 it was a farmstead until 1941, when the state bought it; it became a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
