Haynie-Embrey House
Nelsonville, Austin County · Texas
Erected 1978
The house now stands near Nelsonville, a farm town named for D. D. Nelson, who opened a store there just after the Civil War. Edward Daughtry had settled at the site around 1855, and Isaac Lewis soon ran a store and a saw and grist mill and later a cotton gin. Many residents were German-speaking immigrants from Bohemia, who came in large numbers in the late 1860s and early 1870s and bought much of the surrounding farmland. A post office opened in 1872 with R. W. Thompson, the first physician, as postmaster; it closed in 1909.
