Hammond Junior College
Hammond, Tangipahoa County · Louisiana
Linus A. Sims, principal of Hammond High School, founded the school in 1925, and the Tangipahoa Parish School Board ran it. It began modestly, offering only a teaching certificate, and the school board paid for it from the parish. Two years later it moved to a larger site in north Hammond, and in 1928 it was renamed Southeastern Louisiana College and entered the state system. Bachelor's degrees came in 1937 and 1939 brought the first graduates, and in 1970 the college became a university.
