Hale County
Plainview, Hale County · Texas
Erected 1936
John C. Hale was born in Virginia on April 3, 1806, and came to Texas from Louisiana, settling in what became San Augustine County in the Sabine District. He was elected first lieutenant of Capt. Benjamin Franklin Bryant's Company K in Sidney Sherman's Second Regiment and was buried on the San Jacinto battlefield. His widow, Barshaba, later married the administrator of his estate, and his heirs received land grants in 1850 and 1851. He has often been confused with John K. Hale, who came from Maine in 1831 and also settled in the Sabine District.
