Edwin Lowden Lowe
Plainview, Hale County · Texas
Erected 1973
The town Lowe helped found grew quickly. Within a year it had seventy-five people, a hotel and a Methodist church, and in October 1889 John Davidson and D. B. Hill started the county's first newspaper there, the Hale County Hesperian; the first public school opened the same year. Sitting on a cattle trail in country with good water, ranchland and soil, Plainview by 1892 had four churches, two hotels, a seminary, a newspaper, stagecoach service, numerous businesses and about 250 people. Lowe did not live to see most of it.
