Gunnison Massacre (2) Monuments
Hinckley, Millard County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1927
On October 26, 1853, a band of Pahvant killed Captain John W. Gunnison and seven of his survey party near Sevier Lake — men who had no hand in what got them killed. Days earlier, a Missouri wagon train had murdered a Pahvant near Meadow Creek; by the logic of blood revenge, the next whites the grieving band found answered for it, and that was Gunnison's mapping crew. It happened amid the Walker War; Chief Kanosh later helped broker peace. Two monuments mark the spot west of Hinckley — the 1927 bronze plaque long since stolen.
