Guillem's Graveyard

Nothing cast marks the graveyard; a printed Park Service panel beside its rock walls does the work. The register says almost a hundred soldiers were buried here and moved in the 1890s, and counts no one else. The panel lists the war's dead on every side, civilians and Modoc among them. The register also misspells the name: the camp alongside was Gillem's, for Colonel Alvan Gillem, who commanded here in the spring of 1873, when up to six hundred men lived for seven weeks on this lava ground, many of them recent immigrants with little training.
