Good Hope Hall
Lafayette, Lafayette County · Louisiana
Masses were once held in the hall. Around 1950 Saint Paul the Apostle Church, described as the area's first Black Catholic parish, built Good Hope Chapel at 301 East Convent Street so the services could move. Saint Paul Parish had served Black Catholics in Freetown-Port Rico and La Place since 1911. The chapel was added to the Lafayette Historic Register as No. 098 on May 15, 2014. Preserving Lafayette says the neighborhood these congregations served predates the incorporation of Vermilionville and includes families of African, Indigenous and Caribbean descent.
