Gonzales Cannon
Gonzales, Gonzales County · Texas
Erected 1936
The officer who came for the gun had orders to take it without starting a war. Domingo de Ugartechea told Lt. Francisco de Castañeda to use force if he had to but to avoid open conflict, and the hundred dragoons rode out of Bexar on September 27, 1835. At the Guadalupe they found high water and eighteen armed men. Castañeda said he carried a dispatch for alcalde Andrew Ponton and was told Ponton was away, so he camped 300 yards from the ford. A Coushatta man later told him the Texan volunteers numbered at least 140.
