Glencoe

Glencoe, Calaveras County · California

The state registered a town that had already gone. Glencoe was Mosquito Gulch first, and the register admits in its own text that not one of the old buildings remains: the business end of it stood on the north side of the gulch and is not there. Mexicans worked the mines first in the early 1850s, and quartz mattered more here than placer. No plaque has ever been located here. What survives is a zip code and an abandoned post office.
