The Glass House, Casa Materna of the Vallejos
Watsonville, Monterey County · California
Nothing cast marks this site, and nothing of the house survives. It stood on a bluff above the Pajaro Valley, on farmland now. The register gives the house to Ignacio Vallejo, father of Mariano Guadalupe, in the 1820s. The name came later: a descendant wrote in 1911 that when Juan Antonio Vallejo ordered window glass in 1852, a hundred finished windows arrived, and he built them into a glass porch. The state registered the ruin in 1947 and voted money to restore it, then dropped the plan over costs and roads. A bulldozer took it in January 1962.
