George W. P. Hunt in Globe
Globe, Gila County County · Arizona
Before he was Arizona's first governor, George Hunt arrived in Globe in the early 1880s with almost nothing to his name. He waited tables and worked underground, then took a job behind a store counter, then bought the store; the mining town made the man. Arizona elected him governor seven times, more than any state has chosen anyone, and later sent him to Siam as ambassador. He kept faith with the miners and unions of towns like this one all his life.
