Old Dominion Mine
Globe, Gila County County · Arizona
The Old Dominion was the mine that made Globe more than a silver flash in the pan. Copper claims first staked in 1873 became, by the 1880s, one of the great producers of the Southwest, its shafts and smelter pulling wealth out of the Pinal foothills for fifty years. Water beat it in the end: the deeper the miners dug, the harder underground flooding fought back, and when copper prices collapsed in the 1930s the pumps finally lost. The headframe still marks the hill.
What the plaque says
Included in this historic copper mine are the Globe ledge silver claims. Discovered in 1873, the first to yield profitable ore in the Globe-Miami district. The Old Dominion included many other early claims. Production ceased in the 30s, due to subterranean flooding and the lowered price of copper.
