City of Globe

Globe, Gila County County · Arizona

Globe exists because the government took the ground out from under the San Carlos Apache. When prospectors found silver here in the mid-1870s, on reservation land, Tucson boosters petitioned Washington to cut the mineral strip loose; the agent agreed, and a twelve-mile band was severed from the reservation and handed to miners. The camp boomed to seven hundred people by 1880 and became the seat of new Gila County in 1881. When the silver thinned, copper carried the town for a century.
