Historical Marker
George Tyler Wood
Point Blank, San Jacinto County · Texas
Erected 1911
The 1911 granite obelisk reads George Tyler Wood, and that matters. The Handbook of Texas says early accounts gave his middle name as Tyler, but some twentieth-century sources wrote George Thomas Wood, possibly because S. H. German's 1917 Southwestern Historical Quarterly article claimed the monument said Thomas. It does not. His wife, his mother and three of their children were buried near him on the grounds of the family's first plantation, in what became known as the Robinson graveyard. Wood County and Woodville, the Tyler County seat, are named for him.
