Trail of the John C. Frémont 1844 Expedition
Stockton, San Joaquin County · California
Erected by Daughters of the American Revolution, El Toyon Chapter, 1925
No state plaque stands at the camp. The Daughters of the American Revolution marked it in 1925, promoting Frémont to the rank he would reach seventeen years later; in March 1844 he was a lieutenant of topographical engineers, leading his party south along the valley after the winter crossing of the Sierra. In 2012 the same chapter added a second plaque for Kit Carson, his scout, and both hang on the brick gateway of the Dodge House, built in 1866, now part of a winery north of the Calaveras River.
