Reuel Colt Gridley Monument
Stockton, San Joaquin County · California
The flour sack raised $275,000 for the Sanitary Commission and left Reuel Gridley poor. Carrying it through the West and East drained his savings and his health, and he died nearly destitute at forty-one in 1870 at Paradise, in Stanislaus County, where he kept a store and the post office. He had asked to be buried in Stockton. Rawlins Post of the Grand Army of the Republic raised this marble monument and life-size statue over his grave in 1887. Its carving spells him Ruel, and the state's tablet on the base gives only a number.
