Francisco Solano Alviso Adobe
Pleasanton, Alameda County · California
No state plaque stands here. A docent told a landmark photographer in 2014 that it had come down because its text was wrong, and the register still carries that text: the house built in 1844-46 by Francisco Solano Alviso, and Frémont headquartered in it after a battle in Sunol Canyon. The park's own panel dates the adobe to 1854; the builder was his son Francisco, and nothing puts Frémont here. The 1844 house was José Dolores Pacheco's, half a mile north, long gone. From 1919 to 1969 Meadowlark Dairy hands ate in this kitchen.
What the plaque says
Alviso Adobe Community Park Alviso Adobe Built in 1854, the Alviso Adobe is one of the few adobe structures remaining in the Bay Area. Declared a California Historic Landmark in 1954, the building stands relatively unmodified since the 1920s. The adobe was in continuous use from 1854 until the Meadowlark Dairy closed in 1969. During the dairy period, workers took their meals in the kitchen and dining room of this building.
