Vallejo Flour Mill
Fremont, Alameda County · California
Erected by Department of Public Works, Division of Highways
The mill ground wheat on mission land, and the miller had run the mission. José de Jesús Vallejo became administrator of Mission San José in 1837, during secularization, and resigned in 1840 after an inspection by William Hartnell; in 1842 Governor Alvarado granted him four square leagues of former mission ground here. His adobe mill of the early 1840s came down in 1909 for a railroad switch. The foundation in the park is his second mill, three storeys on an overshot wheel, built in 1856 rather than the 1853 this pointer casts half a mile away.
