Fort Sully
Sully County · South Dakota
Erected by residents of Sully County, 1929
This granite outran the reservoir. Sully County residents set it at the second Fort Sully in 1929, and in 1961, as the plate on its plinth records, it was carried to the courthouse lawn ahead of Lake Oahe, which now covers the fort ground on the river's east bank. Its carved dates differ from the Army's: the post was established on July 25, 1866, and the garrison marched out on October 30, 1894, with the fort given up by the end of November. The state's own register entry for the fort ends it in 1892.
