Historical Marker · No. 584
Fort Miller
Friant, Fresno County · California
Erected by E Clampus Vitus, Jim Savage Chapter 1852
No state plaque stands; the only plate here, about the town of Millerton, was cast by a Clampers chapter named for James Savage, who led the Mariposa Battalion. His men set up Camp Barbour on this river in April 1851, and on the 29th federal commissioners signed a treaty there that traded the land, which State Parks names as Dumna and Kechaye Yokuts ground, for a reservation Congress never ratified. The register dates the fort to 1852, after its own treaty; that was only the year the post became Fort Miller. The site lies under Millerton Lake.
