Site of First Junior College in California
Fresno, Fresno County · California
Erected by Fresno Tech Alumni Association
No state plaque stands here; the Fresno Tech alumni set up their own, and it lists five names for one address. A high school opened on this corner in 1895, and in 1910 it began teaching college courses, which made it the first public junior college in California, the start of today's Fresno City College. In 1911 the normal school that grew into Fresno State began in the same building. The plaque follows the building through its later lives, a technical high school until 1948 and the junior college until 1959. The 1895 building is gone.
