Fort Halleck - Fort Laramie Road
Albany County · Wyoming
Erected by Historical Landmark Commission of Wyoming, 1953
The frontier town the stone points to lived and died by the railroad. Rock Creek grew up around a Union Pacific station in 1868 and became the railhead for an eighty-mile freight road north to Fort Fetterman, four days by wagon; for a time it was among the largest shipping points on the line. When Fetterman closed in 1882 the freighting faded, and on April 1, 1900 the railroad left the town for a new route. Its people moved to the new station at Rock River, the plat was vacated in 1904, and the site became a ranch.
