First Christian Church of Crockett
Crockett, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1997
Before 1899 or 1900, Aldrich says, Crockett had no organized Christian Church. A small band of members met first in the Opera House and later in the district courtroom in the courthouse, with services led by Rev. Virgil Graves. In 1901 Rev. Harry H. Hamilton of Lovelady began visiting, and a congregation formed to build a church. Aldrich says too much credit cannot be given to Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Berry, and that without Mr. Berry's efforts the building would probably never have gone up. He lists the ministers since, from J. A. Arnold to Marion Browning.
What the plaque says
First Christian Church of Crockett Members of this congregation met for abut two years before they were formally organized in 1901 under the leadership of the Reverend Harry Hamilton. A wood sanctuary built in 1901 served the congregation until 1949, when a larger brick church edifice was erected. A fellowship hall was added in 1960. Membership dropped in 1975, and ministerial students conducted worship services. By 1979 church membership tripled and a new fellowship hall was built. The congregation supports many domestic and foreign mission programs, and continues to serve the community. (1997)
