Eli Mitchell
Gonzales, Gonzales County · Texas
Erected 1962
Mitchell came from Turkey Foot, Pennsylvania, and reached Texas in 1824 as one of Austin's Old Three Hundred, two years after his brothers William and Asa. He lived at San Felipe before moving to Gonzales in 1828, and in 1835 he was elected first regidor of DeWitt's colony. He was among the founders of Masonry in Texas. His claim for the supplies he furnished before the siege of Bexar was not paid until 1856. Gonzales County elected him tax assessor and collector four times, from 1850 to 1860, and Mitchell County carries his name and Asa's.
