Historical Marker
Amasa Turner
Gonzales, Gonzales County · Texas
Erected 1962
Turner came from Scituate, Massachusetts, and was in the lumber business at Mobile when yellow fever sent him to Texas in 1835 to recover. He fought at Bexar as a lieutenant in Robert M. Coleman's company, then raised ninety-nine volunteers in New Orleans in January 1836 and led a company of regulars at San Jacinto. He commanded the Galveston post as a colonel before retiring in August 1837. Cotton on Cedar Bayou and a town on Galveston Island both failed, and he moved to the Navidad in Lavaca County and served two terms in the legislature.
