Historical Marker
Drew County Troops
Monticello, Drew County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
Sixteen companies came from a county where 3,497 people, more than a third of the population, were held in bondage in 1860, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. The Ninth Arkansas, which took Drew County companies, lost about 132 of 338 men at Shiloh, and survivors surrendered with the Army of Tennessee in North Carolina in April 1865. The 2015 marker was sponsored with the Slemons chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a Lost Cause memorial group named, the encyclopedia says, for the Drew County colonel who led the Second Arkansas Cavalry.
