Dewville United Methodist Church
Nixon, Gonzales County · Texas
Erected 1986
The town the church moved to in 1897 was new. Dewville stands on the Old San Antonio Road between the vanished communities of Albuquerque and Sandies Chapel, and it is named for John Frank and Thomas M. Dew, who opened a steam gin there in 1885. A Baptist church followed about 1890 and a post office in 1894. A two-story school went up in 1901, and Sandies Chapel School joined it in 1907. As the railroad town of Nixon grew, Dewville faded: the post office closed in 1955, and about fifteen people lived here by 1970.
What the plaque says
Dewville United Methodist Church Settlers in the community of Sandies began to hold Methodist worship services in 1842. Sandies Chapel was chartered by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1857. Trustees were Newburn Guinn, David Barnes, E. R. Hurt, D. P. Briggs, and J. T. Gillett. In 1897, the congregation moved one mile to the new community of Dewville where a church was built on land donated by Mrs. C. C. Vernor, the wife of an early local pastor. Over the years, the church has provided significant service and leadership to the town and remains an active institution here. Texas sesquicentennial 1836-1986 Incise on base: In memory of Rev. J.
