Cutoff Fever
Malheur County · Oregon
The board's title is also the title of a history of the Elliott train that Leah Collins Menefee and Lowell Tiller ran in the Oregon Historical Quarterly in six parts from December 1976. The board's third train began with a road survey. In July 1852 William Macy and John Diamond worked up the upper Willamette, climbed the mountain they named Diamond Peak and found a crossing now called Emigrant Pass, south of today's Willamette Pass. Their party of road viewers rode east, and in the Harney Valley fight that turned them back, Macy, Diamond and one Clark were wounded.
