Historical Marker
South Alternate Route of the Oregon Trail
Malheur County · Oregon
OTE's register text for this marker opens in the late 20th century, a slip for the nineteenth. The route itself was chosen less often than forced. At Three Island Crossing near Glenns Ferry about half the emigrants tried the gravel bars; when the Snake ran high most could not, and stayed on the south bank, the dry, sandy road that wore out people and stock. The branches met again at old Fort Boise, across the river less than eight miles from here, where the north-bank trains forded back over the Snake into what is now Oregon.
