Crazy Woman Battle Monument
Buffalo, Johnson County · Wyoming
The officer this stone names was Lieutenant Napoleon H. Daniels of the 18th Infantry. On July 20, 1866, he and Lieutenant George Templeton rode about a mile ahead of a small train bound for Fort Phil Kearny, and Lakota and Cheyenne warriors defending their country caught them in the open. Daniels was killed by an arrow; Templeton reached the wagons. A second soldier, Lance Corporal Terrence Callary, died at the corral, and he may be the stone's Sergeant Terrel. Daniels was buried with military honors two days later.
