Community of Theon
Georgetown, Williamson County · Texas
Theon's most lasting buildings are religious and communal. The Handbook says Holy Trinity Catholic Church was established in 1889, that its church dates from 1913, and that Moravia Hall was built in 1938. The school merged with Jarrell's in 1948. The community has had about twenty residents in recent decades, and its only business was the Possum Inn, a tavern and cafe that in 1984 was noted for a bowl of live rattlesnakes on its bar. The plaque puts the Catholic church and school at nearby Corn Hill; the Handbook places the church at Theon.
What the plaque says
Community of Theon Attracted to the rich farm land, immigrants from Austria, Bohemia, Germany, Moravia and Silesia came here in the 1880s-90s. This community grew around a cotton gin built about 1883. A Catholic church and school operated at nearby Corn Hill. A post office, named "Theon" for the Greek "to God", opened in 1890. A rifle club sponsored dances, rifle contests and other socials. Farmers started a beef club, butchered mean monthly and shared it with all families. After the post office and school closed, the cotton gin continued to serve this area.
