Cochran Chapel Methodist Church
Dallas, Dallas County · Texas
Erected 1970
The chapel began as two congregations looking for one roof. According to the church's history, Rev. Thomas Brown preached the neighborhood's first sermon in the Cochran cabin in 1844, and Rev. Daniel Shook formed the first circuit in March 1845 with five members. In the mid-1850s the Methodist societies at Webb Chapel and Cedar Springs agreed to merge and build near the Cochran farm, halfway between. At the 1858 dedication, women sat on one side of the aisle and men on the other, and guns were stacked beside the door for protection.
