Civil War in Fulton County
Mammoth Spring, Fulton County · Arkansas
Erected 2015
The Salem wagon train is one of the war's disputed stories. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas says the party was about 150 Unionist men plus women and children, fleeing Jacksonport for Rolla, Missouri, escorted by 200 First Nebraska cavalrymen until they were ordered back. The first report counted about 80 men dead, an unknown number of women and every wagon burned. On June 5, Brigadier General Odon Guitar at Rolla called such reports utterly false and unfounded; Second Wisconsin Cavalry had met the party and escorted it into Missouri. A historian notes that wartime rumors were recorded before being refuted.
