Action at Salem

Mammoth Spring, Fulton County · Arkansas

Part of the Confederate force at Salem was local. Lt. Col. Samuel N. Wood, leading the Union column, put the Confederates in the swamp northeast of town at 600 to 1,000 men, and about 250 men from Salem reinforced them. The four-hour fight on March 13, 1862, cost the Union four killed, eighteen wounded and one missing; Wood estimated Confederate losses at a hundred at least. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas also calls it the Action at Spring River. The war later took the town: fire destroyed the courthouse and nearly all of Salem but one log cabin.
