City of Sherman
Sherman, Grayson County · Texas
Erected 1936
Sidney Sherman was a manufacturer before he was a soldier. Born in Massachusetts in 1805, he started the first company to make cotton bagging by machine at Newport, Kentucky, and in 1835 sold the plant to equip fifty-two volunteers for Texas. The Handbook says they carried the only flag the Texans had at San Jacinto. After annexation he organized the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway, which built the first rail line in the state. The Handbook calls him one of the state's earliest railroad promoters.
