Chevra Kaddisha (Home of Peace Cemetery)

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

A chevra kaddisha is not a place. It is the volunteer society that washes and watches over the dead, and Sacramento's Jewish community had one before it had a building to pray in. In November 1850 a deed put a lot in the square between Thirty-second and Thirty-third into trust for the Sacramento City Hebrew Association as a burial ground, the first Jewish cemetery in California. The landmark carries the society's name rather than the ground's. There is no plaque here of any kind.
