Carlos Ygnacio Velasco House
Tucson, Pima County County · Arizona
From this 1870s house Carlos Velasco ran one of the most influential Spanish-language newspapers of the border, El Fronterizo, which he published from 1878 until his death in 1914. The print shop was here; the family lived behind it. Velasco was more than an editor: he helped found the Alianza Hispano-Americana, a mutual-aid society that spread across the Southwest to defend the rights and pool the resources of Mexican Americans. The house is a landmark of a Tucson that thought, argued, and organized in Spanish.
