Historical Marker

Brownsville

Linn County · Oregon

OTE's text for this marker opens by giving the valley's mounds to "ancient Mound Builders" who came before the Kalapuya. The mounds were Kalapuya. More than a hundred stood along the Calapooia and its creeks between Corvallis and Sweet Home, low rises built up over the last four thousand years from village debris, some of them used for burials, and copper, coins and buttons in valley mounds show the practice lasted into the 1850s. Plowing has since flattened nearly all of them, and the Kalapuya historian David G. Lewis counts fewer than ten still standing.
