Historical Marker
Brewer Cemetery
Douglass, Nacogdoches County · Texas
Erected 1936
The 1816 on this marker is family tradition. A finding aid for the Henry Brewer Family Papers at Stephen F. Austin State University says Brewer is said to have first come to Texas that year, but no documentation places him here before 1833, when he bought land from Joseph Durst. The same aid says his son Henry Mitchell Brewer fought at the Battle of Nacogdoches in 1832 and at San Jacinto in 1836. Henry Brewer died in Nacogdoches County on January 23, 1865, and was buried in the cemetery.
