Blytheville Black Commercial Historic District
Blytheville, Mississippi County · Arkansas
Erected 2022
On Saturdays in Blytheville's segregated years, sharecropper families came to town and Ash Street filled so completely that people walked in the roadway. The Blytheville Social Arts Club and the Royal Brotherhood Club named an honorary Mayor of Ash Street each year, and the annual National Cotton Picking Contest was marked with a street dance. B.B. King played the nightclubs, the gospel choir Wings Over Jordan performed at the movie theaters, and a variety store on the street was listed in the Green Book in the 1960s.
